Lumbar Support Wheelchair Cushion

When an individual sits in a standard sling-back wheelchair for long periods, the flexible vinyl or nylon upholstery stretches out over time. This creates a dangerous orthopedic issue known as the hammocking effect.  Without rigid framework reinforcement, a user's hips naturally slide forward, the pelvis tilts backward (posterior pelvic tilt), and the lower spine bows outward into a slouched, C-shaped curve (kyphosis). This causes intense lower back pain, breathing restriction, and uneven sacral pressure distribution.

The Vaunn Medical Lumbar Support Wheelchair Cushion  features a removable, heavy-duty hardboard insert engineered to eliminate the "hammock effect"—the painful sagging caused by worn-out sling seating. By providing a completely flat, rigid foundation, this cushion prevents your hips from rolling inward, evenly distributes your weight, and drastically reduces pressure points during extended sitting.  

How this works?

The Wheelchiar cushion consists of a flat wooden composite board that spans directly across the open gap between the wheelchair's vertical steel backposts. This stops the flexible nylon backing fabric from flexing backward under the patient's body weight, creating a strictly flat, solid foundation. With the hardboard providing a solid wall behind the cushion, its contoured foam will be allowed to compress only where your body needs it to. It fills in the empty gap at the small of the lower back, tilting the pelvis back into a healthy, upright position and taking immediate pressure off the tailbone for ideal anatomical positioning.
